McKamey Manor: An Extreme Experience

Gabriella Sandoval, Staff Writer

Haunted houses across the world vary in design, visuals, execution, and levels of scariness. Although, there are some far more intricate than they initially seem. Known as the “scariest haunted house in America” is the notorious McKamey Manor. It has gained national recognition for its over-the-top model of a haunted house. Commonly referred to as a “torture chamber” due to the disturbing scenery and physical interactions, the Mckamey Manor offers a $20,000 cash prize for any attendee that completes the full attraction. This mission has yet to be accomplished.

A Review of Adams Mystery Playhouse

Austin Price, Editor in Chief

Located off Federal Boulevard, just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Downtown Denver, a building that’s both haunting and enchanting stands looming over the road, peeking above the trees. With its intimidating size and neon sign in the shape of a magnifying glass, Adams Mystery Playhouse sits above the chaos of the street and creates an air of mystery and magic. Adams Mystery Playhouse is Denver's longest running interactive comedy murder mystery dinner show, and Denver’s only full-time comedy murder mystery dinner theater. At the Playhouse, guests help solve humorous murder mysteries over a formal dinner, at a mansion that was once used as a mortuary.

Horror Movie Royalty: Iconic Scream Queens

Austin Price, Editor in Chief

Horror movies are an essential part of enjoying the Spooky Season. As a self-proclaimed Spooky Season enthusiast, I have amassed a collection of favorite freaky films and Halloween features. A common trend in a lot of my favorite scary movies is the consistent casting and return of pop culture royalty. Many Halloween films and horror movies rely on the same actresses to portray victims of scary stories and sinister situations. These films often feature this actress as the heroine of the story, mainly because she survives until the end. While their valiant finish is notable, these lead actresses have gained a reputation for their infamous and iconic vocals. These women are the Scream Queens.

Music for the Masses: A New Album

By Austin Price, Editor in Chief

Singer / songwriter David W. Jacobsen is an accomplished artist with a menagerie of work to prove it. His latest album, Music for the Masses, was recently released in 2023. With 7 songs, and a listening time of 32 minutes and 54 seconds, Music for the Masses is a mixed genre album that combines humor with contemplation. Jacobsen sings of contradictions, opinions, and reflections through the lens of both a human, and an artist. The album has an unapologetic response to society’s confines and contains explicit topics. However, this raw and somewhat vulgar approach to his music gives Jacobsen an air of authenticity and a tone of realism. According to Jacobsen, “this album is about the contradictions of trying to create music that other people will like that you still like yourself,”.

Boba Spotlight: Colorado Tea Station

By: Sandra Vo, Staff Writer

Nestled just on the border of Denver’s bustling downtown district, Colorado Tea Station is the first pick for our Boba Spotlight and for obvious reasons. More than just a boba shop, Colorado Tea Station serves everything from takoyaki (Japanese octopus), instant ramen, and bingsu (Korean shaved ice) to mochi donuts and cake slices. Their menu truly lives to serve any type of craving you might have.

Overwhelmed by the sheer variety? Don’t worry! Their staff is always incredibly friendly and helpful, and service is quick even during rush hours. While waiting for your drinks and food, you can admire the Instagram-worthy interior and the zither they have on display in the drinking area. Their Korean music playlist is nothing to sneeze at either.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that their boba is anything to sleep on. Having been there a couple times now, my experience has been consistently wonderful. The boba is chewy and soft, and you really can’t go wrong with any drink that you decide to pair it with. Colorado Tea Station also offers a variety of different toppings if you’re not particularly fond of the classic tapioca boba. They have a wide selection of jellies to add to your drink including lychee, mocha, and crystal jelly, and anybody feeling more adventurous can try out their taro and sweet potato balls.

For their drinks, they offer the classic milk teas and fruit teas, but also some non-caffeinated choices for anybody who likes their boba late at night. As a person who prefers non-caffeinated drinks, I’ve gotten their strawberry milk slush and peach yogurt drinks, both topped with boba and incredibly tasty. Not a fan of cold drinks? They also offer a wide selection of hot traditional Chinese brewed teas such as jasmine and rose oolong.

Their desserts are equally tasty and appetizing. My friends have boasted of their chocolate cakes and mochi donuts. Having tried their mango snow ice myself, I can’t say I’m surprised. Colorado Tea Station strives to only put out the best of the best, and they deliver on that promise.

For our overall Boba Spotlight rating, this place deserves a 10/10.
