Creative Corner and Submission Guidelines

Welcome to the Highlander Creative Corner a new section in the Highlander Magazine where we get to see students’ and facultys’ original short fiction, poetry, music, film, and visual art. Submissions are open now and on a rolling basis from March until the end of the semester.

Guidelines are as follows and can be found in the Creative Commons section on our website:

1.       Short fiction

a.       Must be no more than 2000 words

b.       Must include an email address, full name plus your preferred name to be associated with your work, page numbers, and be in 12pt Garamond font (the purpose of this is for accessibility of our review committee)

c.       Must not include excessive profanity or excessive violence*

d.       All short fiction must be in a Word Doc.

2.       Poetry

a.       Must include an email address, full name plus your preferred name to be associated with your work, and be in 12pt Garamond font

b.       Any format or length of poetry will be accepted so long as it does not exceed 2000 words

c.       All poetry must be in a Word Doc.

3.       Music

a.       Must be no longer than 6 minutes

b.       Must not include excessive profanity*

c.       Must be submitted as an MP3 file

4.       Film

a.       Must be no longer than 15 minutes

b.       All forms of film will be accepted including but not limited to short documentary and short narrative.

c.       Must not include excessive profanity or nudity*

d.       Must not include excessive violence*

e.       Must be submitted as an MP4 or other email-able file

5.       Visual Art

a.       All forms of visual art will be accepted including but not limited to painting, drawing, cartoons, and photography

b.       Must be submitted in a jpeg image format

c.       Must not contain excessive nudity or excessive violence*

*Depend on your own good judgement for what excessive means.

If you are selected for publication in the Highlander Magazine you will receive a prompt email from us notifying you of your selection and the date on which your work will appear on our site. Publication will ultimately depend on the discretion of our staff.
